Greg Gutfeld And A Punch In His Redeye
It seems Greg Gutfeld and his gang at Redeye have set off a shit storm among Canadians regarding remarks Gutfeld made about the Canadian military last week. I haven’t seen Canadians this upset since the Great Tim Horton’s Roll up the Rim to Win Scandal of 2006.
While many Canadians say they are angry at Gutfeld, I see it more as righteous indignation. Canadians are mighty righteous, great at throwing accusations and insults, but when someone says something about them, they scream and cry and whine that mean ole bullies are picking on them.
I watched the video in question about 10 times so far and I see no evidence that Gutfeld was disparaging our troops. At one point he even said he respects troops regardless of what nation they serve in. What Gutfeld was making fun of was the Canadian General telling the world that Canada may have to stop fighting because we don’t have mechanics to fix our tanks or funding to support our military any longer.
And that is funny. Granted, it’s piss poor and a terrible reflection on us, but it’s not Gutfeld’s fault that the previous liberal government stripped our military to the bare bone and put them in harms way by not properly funding them. It’s not Gutfeld’s fault that Canada has a weak military and is only a fraction of what it once was. It’s not Gutfeld’s fault that Canada has relied on America to shoulder the burden of military responsibility across the word for the last 50 years.
It’s also curious to The Mayor that those getting the most upset at Gutfeld’s comments are those that despise our military and never wanted us to fight in Afghanistan in the first place. I think this is faux anger on their part, but it’s an easy way to get a few shots in on the Americans and especially the evil Fox network.
The same people that feign this so-called anger are the same people that call American troops baby killers, call Americans fat and ignorant, and have no problem insulting America, its troops, and its people at any time.
And now they are upset that Gutfeld pointed out that our military is a fucking joke.
I hate to tell you this, but Gutfeld is dead right.
Our troops are bloody fantastic, they are all heroes in The Mayor’s eyes. If you follow Mitchieville you know that I have nothing but the utmost respect for our troops. But facts are facts, our military is severely underfunded due to decades of liberal neglect and we let America do all the heavy lifting. Now we are reaping what we have sowed.
Gutfeld apologized, of course–it ws the pc thing to do. But has he soothed the angry masses? Ah, no. So Gutfeld pleased nobody.
Don’t be mad at Gutfeld, be mad at the government that created the mess we’re in. Imagine though, our General actually said we may have to stop fighting for a year due to lack of supplies. Is that not funny to you? Ya, me either, it’s just sick.

I agree with you.
Is Peter MacKay willing to appear three times a week on American TV to apologize for anti-American comments on the CBC, when our southern neighbours point out the vile nature of people like Heather Mallik?
But that’s different, right?
March 25th, 2009 at 9:00 am
I agree with you too.

I don’t. This was a circus of a show, calling our troops cowards and saying they were going to day spas in lieu of serious work. I think after nearly ten years in the same war zone, a refit might be appropriate. It’s also not unreasonable for the Afghanis to start to assume some control over their own territory as well, like we expect so much of the Iraqis.
Saying that they should just invade Canada already was utterly disrespectful. There was none of this criticism of government funding for our military.
Just for the record, Heather Mallick is a vituperator as well.

I’m getting awfully tired of all the faux outrage that’s been going around lately. This Gutfield thing is silly.
I had the pleasure of meeting several members of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry during joint winter exercises when I was stationed in Alaska during the early 80’s. They did a fine job of chasing our butts across the Alaskan bush over the course of a couple weeks. I can think of few others I’d want on my side when the shit hits the fan.

Rocky–when did Gutfeld mention our troops were cowards?
And no, Gutfeld didn’t mention government funding for our military, that was me. Gutfeld mentioned what our general said–we don’t have anyone to fix our tanks or any tanks for our soldiers to train on. Does that not seem laughable to you? Pathetically laughable?
And as for Gutfeld saying America saying should invade Canada–it was a joke and nothing more.
We need to thicken up our skins a bit–people are getting bent out of shape about a show that relies on satire.
And yes, Mallick is a reptile.

“I thought that’s where you go when you don’t want to fight.” “EXACTLY!”
Right there.
If you want to make a case for an overhaul of the Canadian Defence force, by all means let’s get it done. Joking about invading Canada is like asking isn’t it about time the US had its next 9/11.
You don’t have to defend every single aspect of Fox News. Their show isn’t even news by any sort of standard.

“I thought that’s where you go when you don’t want to fight.” “EXACTLY!”
I’m sure he was referring that Canada is where Americans go to desert the army.
As for Fox, I’m hardly defending them, I’m saying though that they are an easy outlet of leftist hatred. I’ve heard all sorts of lefties comment that this is typical of Fox, when it’s Red Eye they should be coming down on.
Like, I don’t hate Fox when Bart Simpson calls W an idiot.

I always get such a kick out of any potshots the Yanks take at our military. The notion that we don’t NEED one, and the reasons why, seem totally lost on them. In effect the only reason we seem to need one is because they are our neighbours…
March 25th, 2009 at 11:41 am
I certainly don’t agree with the sentiment, true, and I don’t pretend to believe that this fellow is representative of all of Fox. I was particularly annoyed seeing Monica Crowley there laughing right along with them. I thought she at least had more of a profile she needed to maintain. (No word yet if Monica’s banter was actually hers or not.)

Velvet–you don’t worry about the Russians and Chinese being a ferry ride across the Bering Straight, eh?
March 25th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Mayor, the Russians are in the Arctic exploring the possibilities of taking all that oil allegedly up there. China has already invaded Canada, and comprise the entire Province of BC, minus a few of us Round-Eyed-Devils.
We must bring the troops home soon, so they can fight the battles here!
I never saw the Fox show mentioned here, it’s way past my bedtime.
Boy, Rocky’s sure in a fractious mood these days, isn’t he! Battling that nurse and now the Mayor!
This site gets more interesting every day!
March 25th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Indeed. Rocky can’t be pinned down by any one ideology. We’ll have to have him killed.
Did I say killed? I meant promoted.
Ya, promoted…

YOU are grossly misinformed and only solidifies the “ugly american” stereotype. For your information the US relies on Canada in Afghanistan. It is Canada who has been in charge of the combat effort for the last 4 years. Do you even know what you are talking about?????? Do you even try to research anything to back your obviously idiotic claim. The US wouldn’t be anywhere if they didn’t have allies to back them up and you know what…YOU do a great disservice to your military because the American military has even said that!! Your own american Vets website has posted this if you don’t believe me go to http://www.vetvoice.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2594.
The year long “break” as everyone likes to call it doesn’t mean the military is going to hang out. Only a complete idiot would think that……oh sorry LOL forgot who I was talking about. They are regrouping but still will maintain their their obligations both nationally and internationally and will remain in Afghanistan in a restructured way. In other words we probably will still be their fighting with the other brave men and women who put their lives on the line from both our country and yours. Canada’s casualty rate is higher than any other countries, even yours and this is backed by your own statistics. When you disrespect our men and women who fight and die you disrespect yours. Fortunately I know that not all Americans are like you in fact a vast majority are NOT thank god. I am fortunate to have a good friend in the US Navy and respect him greatly!! And by the way tell my husband who’s best friend was killed in Afghanistan that his friend was doing yoga and running around in capris.
We are not angry that you make fun of us, crap we have had to listen to endless tired and worn out Canadian jokes throughout the years. And yes we didn’t agree with Iraq but that beef was with your president not your troops. I hold the utmost respect for those who have fought and died there, they are worthy of my respect….YOU are not!!!

D, I don’t think you’d like it if I just lay down for every conflict. What kind of defender of truth would that make me?
Disagreements are bound to happen between people. This certainly doesn’t make me think of Hizzoner as belligerent, and K was just defending her profession as a whole, which I can respect. My articles on here tend to be more on the serious side, but we can all keep our levity, right?
March 25th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Proud Canadian–Thank you for commenting.
First off, this is a Canadian site, you would have done well for yourself by actually reading my post.
You will not find a more patriotic Canadian and bigger supporter of our troops than I. Read through some posts and you will understand what I’m talking about. What I don’t support is the gross underfunding our troops have been put under due to liberal neglect over many years. We are only starting to properly fund our troops.
You don’t need to lecture me on Canada’s role or involvement in Afghanistan, I know every stat and everything they have done. I follow their progress and fully support their mission.
I don’t think you actually watched the Red Eye segment, I think you’re shooting from the hip while lacking any serious knowledge of the events. You are who I was talking about when I referred to *righteous Canadians*.You blather on nonsensical about a subject that is far beyond your reach.
You are welcome on this site and welcome to your opinion, of course, but only come back when you can debate me logically instead of resorting to red herring tactics and misinformed judgements.
You are dismissed, now go learn something.

I think what it gets down to is that it was a piss-poor joke that ended up getting blown way out of proportion. Gutfeld’s a comedian, and not all his jokes are going to be winners, so I think it was appropriate that he apologized. Especially considering that when Canadian troops are asked to fight, they kick ass.
And the fact that they ARE so underfunded(which Gutfeld was clumsily pointing out) is criminal–I was in the US Air Force, and we dealt (and are dealing) with a rapidly aging fleet that we can’t replace and is getting harder to maintain, but our problems are pretty small compared to what the Canadian troops have to deal with to get their mission accomplished. Most of us would have quit rather than deal with all the supply and logistics bullshit the Canadians go through.
