Why Is This Funny?

Someone sent The Mayor this graphic the other day and I had a really good laugh. But when looked at it again today, I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why it’s funny. Is the joke that the guy on the left is looking at the sales figures and thinking they are doing very well, but it turns out the graph was about death and not sales? So deaths are way up? Where do these people work, ya figure?

‘Splain this one to The Mayor, will ya?

They’re morticians, and death is good for business.

They work for whatever big business, academic, or government program tickles your fancy. The suit with the glasses has had a momentary pang of conscience, and wants to confirm it with the other suit, who doesn’t get it, yet.

Hmmmm, can’t seem to wrap my head around it. It must be deeper than I thought.

They are drug manufacturers reviewing results of a drug trial.

One last try, which by my count is two too many (but you’re worth it): It’s popular to conceive of very large organizations, whose workers wear suits, to be up to something nefarious. We’ve always suspected as much from them, haven’t we. This sets the cultural background. Now it is all revealed in this cartoon that shows one fellow disclosing a tragic result to another who just doesn’t get it yet–having become so inured to the malevolence his organization causes that he unwittingly interprets death data as sales data. “No” he suggests, “I don’t see any problem with this improving data. Ohh, ohh, that’s deaths! Well, my, that is different. My mistake.” One would almost expect him to say, “Next chart…” In an organization with a conscience, matters would never get so far as to appear as an upward trend in deaths chart many, many time periods long.

So, you’re telling me this is New York Times funny?

I get it now, I just wished I had consulted you before I posted it, because I wouldn’t have posted it.

Thanks for the explanation, Mr F.

Yes, it’s sick humor. BTW, who reads the NYT?
