New Poll Suggests Egyptians Want Laws Based On The Koran

A US based research group conducted a poll of 1000 Egyptians and found:

Overall, the results of the poll paint a picture of Egyptians as a people who prefer religious moderation over extremism and prize democratic values even if they come at the risk of some political instability.

“Religious moderation” include:

The poll showed that only 36 per cent of those questioned believe it is “very important” for Christians and other minorities to freely practice their religions, suggesting the influence of these militant groups, who have incited hatred of the country’s 10 per cent Christian minority.

The Mayor isn’t sure whether to include that last snippet as part of “religious moderation” or “prize democratic values.”

More “religious moderation” or “prize democratic values” include:

Another 62 per cent of Egyptians believe laws in their country should strictly follow the teachings of the Qur’an.

27 per cent thought it was enough that the laws reflect Islam’s general values and principles.

In other words, 90% of Egyptians prefer “religious moderation” as long as their country follows strict teachings of the Koran. And it’s not important for Christians and minorities to freely practise their religion.

Finally:

Only a minority, however, sympathize with fundamentalist religious parties, according to the results.

And how teensie weensie is that minority?

…as much 37 per cent have a “very favourable” view of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s largest and best organized Islamic group.

And we are not told what % follow other fundamentalist religious parties.

Yup, it all sounds good. Religious moderation and prize democratic values, baby, that’s what it’s all about.

In this country (US), the majority of people believe our laws are based on the ten commandments. Like “Thou shalt have no false gods before me,” and “Honor thy father and thy mother.” Of course this is a crock of shit, as not laws in the US are based on the ten commandments. Given that there are 3 sets of ten commandments in the Christian old testament, and that the important legal principles of not murdering and not stealing are universal precepts, those who believe the ten commandments are the basis for US law are sadly deluded. Unless of course you count the commandment that say “Thou shalt pay thy taxes,” or the law that says “Thou shalt not fly in an airplane without a sexual assault from a government official,” and so forth.
